National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is observed annually on April 16th. This advance care planning initiative was founded in 2008 by attorney Nathan Kottkamp to raise awareness of the importance of planning one’s medical healthcare wishes.

NHDD is celebrated nationally to encourage, educate, and empower each of us to begin conversations about what values and wishes guide our healthcare preferences. The Conversation Project now coordinates the annual event. For more information and resources, visit: theconversationproject.org/nhdd/advance-care-planning

The Colorado Gerontological Society has an Advance Care Planning Series of educational programs to help individuals navigate options and state forms. For more information, contact them directly or visit www.senioranswers.org .

Advance Care Planning is making future healthcare decisions about the care you want to receive if you are unable to speak for yourself. These decisions are based on your personal values, preferences, and wishes. If you are 18 years old or older, take control of your health by completing advance care planning documents. Equally important, inform your loved ones of your healthcare preferences in the event you are unable to communicate those wishes yourself.

Did you know? 90% of people say that planning for serious health matters, including end-of-life care, is important. However, only 37% of people have actually done so. Help raise awareness on the importance of advance care planning. First and foremost, lead by example! After you have thoughtfully considered and made your own healthcare decisions known, share your experience with friends and family. This spring, make completing these important tasks a priority.

Estate planning attorneys can assist you with all documents needed to bring you peace of mind. Spring is the perfect time to complete or review your documents. In my experience, a health crisis or serious accident is the worst time to make these vital decisions.

Let April 16th educate, empower, and inspire you to be proactive in your healthcare decisions.
