The Mindful Path — Pause and Reflect | Jan. 3, 2024

Writer's picture: Marilyn HalpernMarilyn Halpern

“The world is full of miracles patiently waiting to charm us toward our spiritual path.”

Marilyn Halpern

We are welcoming in a new year full of possibility. The Daily Examen, a form of prayer or a process of reflection, was created by Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556). It has offered a way of daily reflection for over 500 years. Countless people have been encouraged, comforted, and inspired by the daily or weekly practice. The Examen is a flexible framework or a tool to help us stay centered as we thoughtfully review our lives. Over time, it can clarify our intentions, values, and purpose.

Daily Examen begins by pausing to intentionally reflect on our day. The key is to pause with intention. Some find it best to couple the Examen concepts with journaling. My adaptation is designed for inclusivity and diversity. (Many amazing and more traditional resources can be found at https://www.ignatianspirituality.com/ignatian-prayer/the-examen.)

Five Reflections of Examen

  • Become aware of the Great Spirit, Source of Life, God, Universal Truth, Divine Nature or Goddess. How was this spirit seen by you today?

  • Review the day and recall 3 to 5 events that fill you with gratitude.

  • Reflect on the emotions and range of feelings you felt during the day. Over time, do you see patterns of your emotional health or destructive habits that impact your mood? Do your emotions serve to help your life or hinder you?

  • Forgive yourself and others. Try to think of circumstances that need this special grace and attention.

  • Look forward to tomorrow with hope. “Tomorrow I am hopeful because …. or “My day tomorrow will be meaningful because …."

The Daily Examen practice is the perfect way to launch the new year with intention and over time it may change your life. The daily or weekly reflection has the power to reduce stress, improve emotional and physical wellbeing and improve mood.

If you would like to deepen your practice, consider a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens (York Street) between January 10 and February 17, 2025, to enjoy the Orchid Showcase. The Orchid exhibit is included with regular admission. You will see spectacular beauty. Undoubtedly, you’ll include the wonderous, indoor experience on your gratitude list.

As we welcome the new year, pause with intention to welcome the miracles today and all that waits ahead. Be well!
