In 1963, Older Americans Month (OMA) was established to celebrate older Americans for their contributions to the nation. More than 60 years later, this tradition continues each May. The Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of OAM. The 2026 theme is Champion Your Health, which encourages taking an active role in managing and advocating for your health, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions.
This year, the focus is on evidence-based approaches that improve one’s health through establishing simple habits and using advanced planning. Spring is the perfect time to create your top five health safeguards to focus on.
Here are some ideas:
Prevention
• Preventive Health: Schedule annual wellness visits and blood labs, stay current with vaccinations (flu, pneumonia), and get recommended cancer screenings.
• Exams: Complete regular screening and check-ups for vision, hearing, and dental.
• Prevent falls: Focus on balance and preventing falls. Prevent falls by removing trip hazards in the home, such as rugs, and wearing appropriate footwear.
Wellness
• Movement matters: Engage in at least 2 hours of moderate-intensity activity per week. Spring is a great time for walking, gardening, and biking.
• Nutrition: Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and stay hydrated. Make your plate colorful and fresh.
• Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep nightly to maintain energy.
• Social Connection: Combat loneliness and isolation by interacting regularly with friends, neighbors, family, or your spiritual community to prevent depression and cognitive decline.
Personal Responsibility
• Choose Power of Attorney Agents: Select someone you trust, such as a spouse, partner, adult child, or a professional. If you are a couple acting on behalf on one another, consider appointing a successor agent. Agents are needed for financial and medical matters.
• Maintain Personal Health Records (PHR): Keep an up-to-date PHR that includes current medications, health conditions, and contact information for all healthcare providers.
• Home Safety Audits: Take responsibility for your living environment by removing tripping hazards like loose rugs and electrical cords to prevent falls.
Simple actions and good habits can have a positive, lasting impact on quality of life and overall happiness. Here’s to a safe, wonderful spring and a summer filled with vitality!
